One of our newest family Christmas traditions is the viewing of A Christmas Story, a story about nine year old Ralphie and the Christmas he longs for a Red Ryder BB Gun. Like many of us, Ralphie has an annoying younger sibling, Randy. Dressed in a red, overstuffed snowsuit, Randy tags along after his brother in his adventures to and from school. Endearing but seemingly not too bright, Randy is the quintessential kid brother we get annoyed with but ultimately love (ahem says Kate).
Randy’s cocktail was inspired by two things, his red snowsuit and the fact that his mother calls him her “little Piggie.” So we decided to create a bourbon cherry sour and used bacon-washed bourbon as the main spirit. The result is a tart, fresh and oh-so-bacony drink.
The Randy Cocktail Ingredients:
- 2 oz bacon-infused bourbon
- 2 oz cherry liqueur
- 1 oz lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp maple syrup
- 4-6 drops Fee's Rhubarb Bitters
- ice
- old-fashioned glass
Put bourbon, cherry liqueur, lemon and maple syrup in shaker with ice. Shake. Strain into old-fashioned glass over ice. Drop in bitters. Swirl.
Cocktail Notes:
We tried three bitters variations:
- Walnut Bitters - really good, but you lose the bacon
- Rhubarb Bitters - SO GOOD!
- Strawberry-Rhubarb Bitters - Keeps it nice and tart but you lose the bacon.
For the cherry liqueur, there are a lot of options. We used a cherry liqueur from a British Columbia distillery called Okanagan Spirits. Super tasty! (Side note - their absinthe is really good too!)
