The Cold Miser is usually one cool cucumber. While generally an affable chap, his archnemesis and brother, Heat Miser, definitely knows how to push his buttons and bring out his icy side. For centuries, according to The Year without Santa, the two brothers have been at war. Eventually, the two reconcile at the insistence of their mom, Mother Nature. But for their years of neverending hostilities (not to mention shooting at a pair of Santa’s elves!), both siblings get a well deserved timeout in the NAUGHTY category.
For the Cold Miser, we definitely wanted a blue-tinted cocktail but we didn’t want to use food colouring and there are only a few blue liquors available. We wanted to stay away from Blue Curaçao because EVERYONE uses Blue Curaçao for their blue drinks. We decided on Hpnotiq which has a slight passion fruit flavour, but blue Alize could also be used. The resulting cocktail is icy and blue like the Cold Miser but with hints of tropical flavours, perhaps reminiscent of his jealousy of his brother.
Cold Miser Cocktail Recipe:
- 1 1/2 oz Hpnotiq
- 1 oz vodka
- 1/2 oz orange liqueur (see note)
- lime juice (1/4 wedge)
- 4 dashes of Dillon's Bitter Lime bitters
- 5 ice cubes
- finely shredded coconut (for rim)
- agave syrup or corn syrup (for rim)
- blender
- cocktail or margarita glass
Put the Hpnotiq, the vodka, the orange liqueur, the lime and the ice in the blender. Blend til you have a nice icy consistency. Dash the bitters into the blender and then swirl to blend them into the drink.
Carefully pour the cocktail into the coconut-rimmed glass (don't try to rim the glass after you put the mixture in).
Cocktail notes:
Originally, we used Grand Marnier for the orange liqueur (note the ingredients picture). After we mixed it, we had a flashback to kindergarten (blue + yellowish orange = green). So if you would like to maintain the blue color of the cocktail, we recommend using Cointreau or Triple Sec for the orange liqueur. If you wanted to deepen the blue colour, you could use Blue Curaçao.
The amount of ice listed will yield a pleasantly icy drink. If you want a more frozen consistency, add more ice cubes.
The original inspiration for this drink was the Snow Glacier cocktail. We changed up the ratios a bit and then added the lime and bitters to make it a smidge more interesting.
We used a relatively workaday vodka since this is a blended drink.
Inspiration:
Here, the Cold Miser sings HIS signature ragtime song - about how he can turn anything to snow with his touch.
I see you went with the Hypnotiq. Not too ghetto?
