How do you solve a problem like Hermey? You know, Hermey. The misfit elf from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer? Anyway...here’s a man, er, elf who doesn’t like his job and clearly cares more about his hair than his fellow elves do. And haven’t we all been in his shoes? That’s probably why we can relate to Hermey so well. We’ve all been that guy at some point in our lives.
It was kind of hard to come up with a cocktail for Hermey. After all, what cocktail naturally springs to mind from an effete elf that clearly uses way too much hair gel. Then we decided to focus on his would-be profession, dentist. What holiday treat would be the bane of dentists everywhere? Caramels! Specifically salted caramels! So we concocted a salted caramel martini for Hermey’s cocktail.
Hermey Cocktail:
- 1 oz vanilla vodka (such as our infused vanilla vodka)
- 1 ½ oz butterscotch schnapps
- ½ oz white vermouth
- cocktail glass
Pour the vodka, schnapps and vermouth into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until cold and pour into a cocktail glass.
Cocktail Notes:
We tried a number of different combinations of alcohols to get the taste that we wanted, including several not listed (rum, pear liqueur, brandy, etc.). While the white vermouth may seem like an odd addition to a sweeter tasting cocktail (it did to us), it works quite well and brings a salty finish to the drink. Nigella actually put us onto this idea, but we added our own twist with the infused vodka.
We didn’t rim the glass with salt because it seemed to margarita-like but some flake salt on top of the cocktail would be a nice touch. We did add a salted caramel to the rim. The caramel is from a place here in Vancouver - Cocolico. So good! We rolled it in flaked sea salt.
Inspiration:
If Hermey made the toys like everyone else did, he would never have learned about the lower bicuspid.
