Prancer, in our minds, is Santa’s gayest reindeer. He’s there, working the sleigh like a champ, holding his own with all those straight reindeer. That’s just one of the reasons he’s on Santa’s Nice list. In fact, he’s beyond Nice. He’s Fabulous.
For Prancer, we wanted something fruity, sparkly and colorful. We decided on a sparkling wine cocktail enhanced with the combination of elderflower and icewine. Topped with a little purple creme yvette liqueur makes the drink, well, kind of gay...but in a good way!
Prancer Cocktail:
- 1 oz St. Germain elderflower liqueur
- 1 oz ice wine
- prosecco or club soda
- Creme Yvette or another violet liqueur
- cocktail mister
- champagne flute
Pour the St. Germain and ice wine into a cocktail shaker with ice. Swirl to chill. Pour into a champagne flute. Top with prosecco or club soda. Spray two mists of Creme Yvette on top of the cocktail.
Cocktail Notes:
All of the liqueurs in the cocktail are a little on the sweet side. Surprisingly, the combination doesn’t produce something that is outrageously sweet but, rather, they complement each other quite well. The mist of creme yvette gives a nice subtle flower taste plus adds a little depth to cut through the sweet. If you wanted it to be more purple in color, add a couple of dashes of the violet.
Creme Yvette is hard to find and may be pricy for one drink (although it is the high point in the classic cocktail, the Aviation). However, liquor stores in both Buffalo and Vancouver carry it. Monin makes violet syrup which would be a good substitute. Monin also makes elderflower syrup if you don’t have St. Germain. Oddly enough, IKEA has elderflower syrup as well.
This is the first drink we've made that has a mist. Kate was a little TOO excited about the mister. It came from The Crafty Bartender for $10. Also known as a "vermouth mister". It's the cheap version and worked just fine.

Oh, yeah. Prancercise. With an awesome twist. Everybody prance now!
