Kate has a special place in her heart for Karen, the heroine of Frosty the Snowman (the classic animated special). Back in the day, Kate was known as Karin and she thought it was pretty awesome to have the hero of a story a) be a girl and b) have the same name (homophonically-speaking). Karen clearly makes the Nice list (she freakin' saved Frosty!) and deserves her own drink. Her classic scene in Frosty where she is shivering on the train is where our inspiration started.
For Karen’s cocktail, we wanted to have something that she would enjoy after coming in from a long day of playing outside. Or more likely something that her parents would make, set aside half for the kids and then spike the other half for themselves in order to deal with the screaming kids. So we decided that some hot apple cider "warmed up" with some brandy and butterscotch would fit the bill perfectly.
Karen Cocktail:
- 1 oz apple liqueur (we used Berentzen Apple, but Calvados or Applejack would be fine as well)
- ½ oz Grand Marnier
- 1 oz butterscotch schnapps
- ½ oz brandy
- 4 oz hot apple cider
- lemon rind
Place the apple liqueur, Grand Marnier, schnapps, and brandy into an 8 oz mug. Add hot cider. Squeeze a piece of lemon rind over the mug and swirl.
Cocktail Notes:
The apple liqueur we used is a little lighter in colour so we added extra brandy to give the drink some more depth of flavour. If you’re using more of an apple brandy, you will want to play with the amounts. In a pinch, you could also double the brandy and add a piece of orange rind if you don’t have Grand Marnier.
Inspiration:
There are clips of EVERYTHING on YouTube, but weirdly, not too many Frosty the Snowman classic animated special clips. So instead, please enjoy the song Frosty the Snowman set to the beat of classic "cups".
